1.Wedding vendor websites
TheKnot and Wedding Wire have taken a lot of the searching out of choosing vendors for your wedding. Having reviews posted and galleries of photos to look at for each company helps narrow down your options. You are able to create a profile page for your wedding day needs and contact multiple artists quickly.
2.Check out their portfolio work first
Artists who have been working weddings for quite awhile and have the experience will also have an expansive portfolio of their work. Not all artists’ styles will work with yours. You wouldn’t hire a photographer or book a venue without looking at pictures or visiting first. The same goes for hair and makeup. Also, check to see if they have listed the years of experience they have, this can make a BIG difference.
3. Book a trial run
Once you have booked a trial run look up photos for inspiration. Not sure where to start? Check out my Pinterest for boards full of inspiration photos. Think of a list of questions you may have that you would like to ask during your trial run. Is there anything new or different you would like to try? Not sure you want your hair up or down? Never tried airbush makeup before? Try it ALL! That’s what a trial run is for. It’s better to test out options during that time than on your actual wedding day.
4. Make sure your artist uses professional, long lasting products
The last thing you want is to be touching up your hair or makeup all day long. Professional hair and makeup artists use products that are made to withstand the weather, crying and hours of wear. If your artist is not using waterproof professional products your makeup and hair will not last the length and movement of a full wedding day.
5. Budget
Always consider your budget. There is a range of pricing when it comes to hair and makeup, however, I firmly believe in the old saying “you get what you pay for”. I have seen absolute horror stories of hair and makeup on wedding days. Actually there are Facebook groups dedicated to it! This is one day to spend that little extra to make sure you look and feel your best. If an artists portfolio photos are limited, prices are low and they don’t list years of experience, do yourself a favor and take a pass on them.
6. Referral
Word of mouth is always the best advertisement. I have received 70% of my brides and bridal parties through referrals. I have been fortunate enough to see several of my brides and bridesmaids in multiple weddings or events because they refer friends and family to me. If someone else can give you first hand insight with an artist they loved, you can truly tell how great of an experience it was to work with them.
Your wedding day should be relaxing, because you know you have the right vendors to do the job! Don’t let your hair and makeup be a last minute thought.
